What a simple yet beautiful artwork by Filipina artist Marilou P. Deniega entitled Tokador.

Tokador is a Tagalog (Filipino Official Language) word to mean a ladies dressing table with large mirror or a chest or set of drawers with a mirror. It is originally from a spanish word: tocador (m) meaning: (cómoda) dressing table or (cuarto) dressing room.

It has the same meaning when it was used in the Philippines during the Spanish occupation in the 1600s but over time, the word evolved to mean other types of furniture such as a wooden cabinet as depicted in this painting, showing a dish cabinet to refer to “tokador.”

The painter according to the notes at the back of the postcard is a gifted artist who has Cerebral Palsy. Her husband and son are also talented artists like herself and painting is their means of livelihood. I can only wish I am half as creative and even one fourth talented artistically as Ms. Deniega- but I am not and I am normal (whatever normalcy means!). She is truly gifted!

As for the sender of this great postcard, I thank Deb!! I owe you! This is way overdue! Please accept my BIG thanks and apology. She sent this on March 14, 2008. I was in the Philippines and Sacramento, CA vacationing until mid-May! Yaiks! (You have some great stamps as well depicting Filipino artists. How do you get them? They don’t have a marked amount on it. Are they commemmorative stamps? Really nice… )

Please send me your home address so I can return the favor by sending you a postcard from here… the least I can do. Thank you again.
